Yanchep is located 56 kilometres north of Perth, within the City of
Wanneroo.
It was until recently a fairly isolated sleepy hamlet of a few hundred houses located along a country lane and accessed only from Wanneroo Road, surrounded by stables, farmland and the Yanchep National Park.
In November 2008 the Marmion Avenue extension from Butler to Yanchep was opened, providing far easier access to this once sleepy hamlet. Currently (September 2011), significant residential development is taking place in Yanchep and development is also commencing in Two Rocks located to the north. While to the south along Marmion Avenue, the development of housing suburbs adjacent to the planned new city of Alkimos is commencing, with many new home sites currently being developed and built on.
Yanchep is without doubt destined to become a significant economic centre and hub of activity in the outer northern suburbs of Perth.
The area boasts a fine semi-private golf course at Sun City Country Club, which is identified as being one of the top courses in Western Australia. This championship course and club house is a mecca for golfing enthusiasts.
The cafe located at Yanchep Lagoon is well worth visiting as it provides excellent, modestly priced food and drinks, plus views that are to die for. See the photograph opposite, which was taken from the cafe.
The entrance to Yanchep National Park is located to the east of the townsite near Wanneroo Road. Carnaby's cockatoos can often be seen in the park between February and June.
