Wyndham is located 3224 kilometres east north north-east of Perth and
102 kilometres north west of Kununurra in the central East Kimberly
region, at the west arm of Cambridge Gulf which is an inlet of Joseph
Bonaparte Gulf on the Timor Sea.
The town has a resident population of about 900, it is a working port, that services a large live cattle export industry, plus services the Kimberley mining and tourism industries and the Ord River Irrigation Project.
It is the state's most northery town and port and is surrounded by the Durack, Pentecost and King rivers to the south, the Forrest River to the west and the Ord River to the north. Much of the land surrounding Wyndham is inhospitable, including the jagged hills of the Bastion Range and the mudflats of the Cambridge Gulf.
Located on the southern tidal waters of the Cambridge Gulf, the town is within reach of some of the Kimberley’s most spectacular landforms, rivers and wetlands. Many tour cruise boats visit the town during extended expeditions to the Kimberley coast.
Located on the sumit of Mount Bastian is Five Rivers Lookout, which is at an elevation of 335m above sea level, overlooks the town and port and provides excellent views of the region.
Although located in the tropics, the town experiences a semi-arid climate. The wet season lasts from late November to March and the dry season lasts from April to early November. The hottest month of the year is November with an average maximum temperature of 39.5°C, and the coolest month is June with an average maximum of 31.0°C.
