Wiluna is located 947 kilometres north east of Perth in the Mid West region on the edge of the Western Desert and close to the start of both the Canning Stock Route and the Gunbarrel Highway.

The economy of the surrounding area is based on pastoral and mining activities, with many mine workers accessing the area on a fly-in/fly-out basis. The climate is hot and dry, with an annual rainfall of 254 mm, and temperatures that typically range from 19°C during July, to 38°C during January.

The region are the site of the state's most advanced uranium mining projects. Three projects are in the approval process, the Lake Maitland uranium project, which has a proposed start-of-production date of 2012, the Lake Way uranium project, to begin in 2013, and BHP Billiton's Yeelirrie uranium project, scheduled for production by 2014. All three projects are located within 100 km of the town.

Also, the growth of iron ore mining in the state may impact the town with a proposal to possibly redevelop the old rail line to the town. In addition, the high price of gold is rekindling interest in gold mining within the region.
