The town's first permanent buildings were constructed in the early 1970's to support iron-ore mining at Pannawonica, processing at Cape Lambert and shiploading at Port Walcott.
Most residents work for Rio Tinto, and the town was originally owned entirely by the mining company although is now administered by the Shire of Roebourne who implemented a public housing scheme.
The town is located close to the original Pilbara settlements of Cossack, Roebourne and Point Samson. A shopping centre, a childcare centre, primary school, church, medical centre, Lifestyle Centre, and volunteer emergency services are available.
Wickham Showground was constructed in 1980 and a School Community Library was created in 1985. Recreational facilities have been created within the town, including a swimming pool, tennis court, indoor cricket net, squash centre, football, cricket and rugby grounds. Plus, netball and basketball courts, and a Community Centre.
The town has a multicultural population of approximately 1800 with many young families living in the community. Junior and senior sporting clubs are active within the town and with three boat ramps located close to the town fishing is popular.
