Westonia is located 314 kilometres east of Perth and 10 kilometres north of the Great Eastern Highway in the Eastern Wheatbelt region.

The town services the agricultural and mining industries in the area, which is presently enjoying a period of renewed activity in gold mining, no doubt this is in some part due to the increased value of gold on world markets.

The shire covers an area of 3,268 square kilometers although has a resident population of only about 250. The major economic activities in the area revolve around broadacre wheat and sheep farming and some gold mining.

The town contains a general store, a community cooperative, a post office and bank agency, a tavern and motel, a hotel and roadhouse, plus a range of trades and shops.
