Wave Rock is located aproximately 345 kilometres east of Perth near Hyden.

The natural rock formation derives its name from its shape, which is similar to a breaking ocean wave. The face of the rock is 14 metres high, and 110m long.

The vertical coloured bands on the rock are caused by the rain washing chemical deposits, carbonates and iron hydroxide, down the face of the rock, forming vertical stripes of greys reds and yellows.

Hyden rock, of which Wave Rock is a part, acts as a catchment for the town's water supplies, with a 300mm high concrete wall located around the upper edge of the rock which diverts water runoff into a storage dam.

Originally formed over 2700 million years ago Wave Rock is part of the northern face of Hyden Rock. The shape was formed by gradual erosion of the softer rock beneath the upper edge over many millions of years. Several smaller examples of such rocks are found within the area.
