Wanneroo is located within the City of Wanneroo 25 kilometres north of Perth.

The townsite has a population of about 11,000 and covers 2.4 square kilometres. Development in the area initially commenced during the late 19th century when many market gardens were first established in the area.

Wanneroo Road/Indian Ocean Drive runs through the townsite from north to south. The Yellagonga Regional Park is located immediately to the west of the townsite.

The Wanneroo Show runs each year on the last Friday and Saturday in November at the Wanneroo Showgrounds. The Show has operated almost uninterupted since 1909 and continues to go from strength to strength with more than 20,000 attendees visiting the show each year.

The City of Wanneroo covers an area of 685.8 square kilometres and is one of the fastest growing local government areas in Australia.

It is bounded by Beach Road to the south, Alexander Drive to the east, Wanneroo Road and Lake Joondalup to the west and the Shire of Gingin to the north. The area includes several coastal suburbs reaching from Mindarie in the south to Two Rocks in the north.

Throughout  much of the twentieth century, the majorty of economic activity in Wanneroo revolved around agriculture, especially market gardens. However, during the 1970's the southern areas of the then Shire of Wanneroo began to become increasingly urbanised as the northern suburbs of Perth continued their ongoing expansion.

During the 1970's a new light industrial area was developed in Wangara, which is located south of the Wanneroo townsite, and to the east of Wanneroo Road.

In the 1980's the development of the City of Joondalup commenced on the western side of Lake Joondalup, culminating in 1998 in the creation of  the City of Joondalup and the City of Wanneroo as two separate local government areas.

In 2011, the rate of suburban growth within the City of Wanneroo continues at an ever accelerating pace, with major road and rail developments providing ever increasing access to the newly developing residential areas.

A major development for the future of Wanneroo, is the proposed creation of the Neerabup industrial area known as Meridian Park, which will when fully developed consist of 400ha of general industrial, service industrial and business zoned land.
