Southern Cross is located 371 kilometres east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway, along the Mundaring to Kalgoorlie Goldfields Water Supply Scheme.

The town is located on the eastern edge of the wheatbelt and the western edge of the Eastern Goldfields. It has a resident population of about 700, and is at elevation of 357 metres above sea level. It is also a stopping point for the Prospector and Indian Pacific passenger train on the rail line between Perth and Kalgoorlie.

The surrounding country is a prosperous, well established farming area, which includes some of the largest farms in the state producing oats, barley, wheat and sheep, although the average annual rainfall of 279 mm makes the land marginal.

The town contains many facilities and services, including, shops, supermarket, takeaway food, restaurant, accommodation, banking, coach stop, medical facilities, including a hospital and ambulance, plus a chemist, hotel, public bar, filling station, mechanical services, bottled gas, newsagent, picnic area, police station, post office, public telephone, rail terminal sports facilities, swimming pool, golf course and places of worship.
