Rockingham is located 47 kilometres south of Perth on Mangles Bay at the southern extremity of Cockburn Sound.

It is a satellite city in the southern corridor of the Perth metropolitan region. The local maritime connections include the ongoing growth of the Royal Australian Navy base at HMAS Stirling and the development of shipbuilding and marine support services Henderson.

The area has a rapidly growing population of about 90,000, and is serviced by several primary schools and high schools, plus by a technical college, a university campus and several public libraries. About 37,000 people are employed locally (2011), and an additional 50,000 residents are expected to live within the city by 2030.

Two substantial shopping districts, plus older style high-street shops, medical practices, restaurants, multi-screen cinema complexes and several golf courses are located within the city.

Several light-industrial, warehouse and showroom developments, exist within the city, including major vehicle dealers and various trade and professional services. Many local retailers operate on designated Sundays and public holidays, when many traders in other metropolitan locations are prohibited from trading.

A rail line runs from Perth to Rockingham and on to Mandurah, the City is also served by the Kwinana Freeway.
