Port Hedland is located 1322 kilometres from Perth in the Pilbara
region.
The climate is warm to hot, with annual rainfall between December and June averaging 311.5 mm. High temperatures tend to restrict summer tourism, with most visitors accessing the area during the cooler winter period between May and September.
The port is the highest tonnage port in Australia and the largest town in the Pilbara, with a population of more than 40 000, which includes the residents of South Hedland, located18 km away.
It has a natural deep anchorage port capable of accommodating ships over 250,000 tonnes. In addition to being the main fuel and container receival point in the region, the port is well located for the shipment of iron ore mined in the nearby Hammersley Ranges. The ore is moved by rail from iron ore mines located to the east and south of the town.
The port handles about 14 million tonnes of iron ore per year. Other major resource activities supported include offshore natural gas exploration and production, plus the export of salt, manganese and livestock.
The BHP Iron Ore Mill located at Nelson Point is the heart of Port Hedlands industry. Daily tours of the Mill are operated, plus the dusty, giant machinery can be viewed from various locations around the harbour.
Also, huge stockpiles of solar-produced snow-white salt are located in the area alongside the main road.
Fish such as bream, whiting, mullet, kingfish and skippy can be caught in various locations around the harbour. Plus, mud crabs are found in the dense mangroves in which samphires and various other salt tolerant plants grow.
