Onslow is located 1,386 kilometres north of Perth in the Pilbara
region. It is currently the major town of the "Coral Coast" and is a
base for activities such as scuba diving on the local coral reefs.
The town is located on the coast 82 km from the main North West Coastal Road, it has a resident population of about 600 and is the supply base for offshore gas and oil fields. This part of the coast is among the north's most cyclone-prone and the town has often suffered severe damage from cyclones.
The Ashburton River is located about a half hour drive away, and the Mackerel Islands are located just 23 kilometres off the coast. There are 10 islands in the group, which are often described as a fisherman's paradise.
The nearby salt production fields are constructed on tidal salt flats surrounding the town. The 1.3 kilometre jetty, 3.5 kilometre conveyor belt and stacker equipment provides spectacular viewing when lit up at night. Subject to the season and the visitor numbers, tours of the salt production facilities are sometimes operated from the local visitor centre.
Accommodation services are available in the town, ranging from camping and caravan parks to chalets, or hotel and motel accommodation. A number of dining options are also available.
There are plenty of fishing opportunities in the area, either at the groyne or at Four Mile Creek. Alternatively, cruise the local creek systems or explore some of the offshore islands.
