The town services the local agricultural community. Surrounding farms mainly produce wheat, barley, canola and wool, plus, lupins, oats, alfalfa and other crops are also grown, while beef cattle, fat lambs and pigs are sideline industries in the area.
Grain silos are located at Ongerup and during harvest time store grain from surrounding farms before it is transported to Albany by road for export overseas.
A resident population of about 120 people live in the town, which contains a pub, a general store, tyre service, primary school, kindergarten, telecentre, caravan park, ambulance service, 18-hole golf course, sports oval, pavilion and a roadhouse.
A police station was formerly located in the town, although this was closed in 2010.
The Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre is located near the town and has a cafe which overlooks the Malleefowl Aviary and local bushland. The gardens are planted with indigenous plants to encourage local birds.
