Northam is located 97 kilometres north-east of Perth in the Avon Valley at the junction of the Avon and Mortlock Rivers.

It is the largest town in the Avon region with a population of about 6000, and is the largest inland town in the state which was not founded on mining. The town is surrounded by the area’s rich farmlands, plus the river flows through the town where it is fringed by grassy banks and shady trees.

The town has an elevantion of 170 metres above sea level, and is a major railway junction and the main commercial centre for the western Wheatbelt. The Avon Descent is held every year starting in Northam and ending in Guildford.

The Northam Agricultural Show takes place each year on a Friday and Saturday in mid September, organised by the Northam Agricultural Society.

The town contains several hotels  and motels, plus bed and breakfast services are available. A caravan park and several farm stay properties are also available close to town.

Ballooning is a very popular activity in the Northam area with operators usually providing rides between April and November.
