Newman is located 1186 kilometres north of Perth in the Pilbara region. The town can be reached via the Great Northern Highway.

The region has an arid climate, with very hot summers and mild winters. Average summer temperatures are among the hottest of any locations in the state, reaching or exceeding 38°C on most days during the summer, with a higest recorded although rare temperature of 47.0°C.

A privately-owned railway, links the town to Port Hedland, and the port was upgraded to handle shipments of iron ore to world markets. The ore trains using the line are typically over 2 km long and have been known to be up to 7km long. The town also services other nearby mining settlements such as Tom Price and Paraburdoo.

The town is serviced by its own airport and regular flights operate to and from Perth .

The worlds largest open-cut iron-ore mine is located at nearby Mount Whaleback and produces 30-million tonnes of iron ore per year. In addition Orebody 29 is another huge iron ore mine located nearby.
