The Murchison region covers a large area in the Mid West of the
state, including the local government areas of Yalgoo, Cue, Mount
Magnet, Murchison and Meekatharra.
The region covers much of the catchment area of the Murchison River, and contains many large sheep stations and cattle stations which are often referred to as pastoral leases. Extensive numbers of feral goats are found in the region which are captured and exported to supplement station incomes.
The Murchison settlement is located on the Carnarvon–Mullewa road and contains the shire Office, a sports club, a museum, a roadhouse and a caravan park.
The permanent resident population of the region is only about 200 and is very scattered, with the largest population centre in the area being Meekatharra. The small mining towns of Yalgoo, Mount Magnet and Cue are also located within the region.
