Mukinbudin is located approximately 293 kilometres and three and a half hours drive east of Perth, and 80 kilometres north of Merredin.

The town is located in a wheat, sheep and cattle farming area located 310 metres above sea level near Lake Campion in the North Eastern Wheatbelt region.

It has a railway siding, hotel with motel units, some eateries, a small shopping centre, the local shire offices, a sales yard for large agricultural equipment, a bulk loading facility and several wheat storage silos.

A population of about 400 people live in the town, which in turn, services a local rural community of a further 400 people and about 150 000 sheep.

The rainfall is low and often unreliable, with the annual average fall being about 289 mm.
