Mount Barker is located on the Albany Highway 360 kilometres south of Perth and 50 kilometres north of Albany.

The town has a population of about 1,800, and contains a hospital, medical centre, police station, TAFE College, a community college catering for K-12 schooling, plus childcare facilities, scout and girl guide troops. New shire offices were opened in the town during 2006.

The main agricultural activities in the area include viticulture, wheat, canola, plantation timber and sheep and cattle are some of the agricultural activities carried out around Mount Barker.

The local council own and operate the Great Southern Regional Cattle Saleyards which provide services to local cattle producers.

The Banksia Farm, which boasts one of every known species of Banksia and most species of Dryandra is located close to town.  Tours of the Banksia and wildflower gardens are available.

The Stirling and Porongurup Range National Parks are located within the area, and these  together with the local wine industry, contribute to the growth of tourism within the area.

Motels, caravan park and a number of bed & breakfasts and farm-stays provide accommodation services in the area.

A steady growth of hobby farming around the town and throughout the shire has been experinced as people abandon the city and look for new lifestyles. As a result a corresponding growth in cottage industries offering art and craft products has been experienced.

A windfarm consisting of three wind turbines provides power to the town and to surrounding areas.
