Mingenew is located 383 kilometres north of Perth. The local economy is based on the farming of sheep, wheat and lupins.

A giant wheat stalk sculpture is displayed at Cecil Newton Park within the town, and is affectionately known by the locals as Big Ears, and emphasises the importance of wheat farming in the area.

The town is located latitude 29.12’ South and longitude 115.26’ east, at an elevation of 153m above sea level. The local climate ranges from 20's to 40’s in summer, with a pleasant winter average ranging from approximately 12 up to the low 20’s. The average annual rainfall is approximately 400mm.

The area is known for its agricultural achievements, in which stock and grain are the mainstays of the district. The CBH Grain Receivals Point is the largest inland facility in the state, with a capacity to store 403,000 tons of grain. The region has ample underground water which has aided the long-term development of the area.

The Mingenew Lions Midwest Expo is an annual agricultural event which has been held each year since 1983 on Thursday and Friday during the third week in September. The event showcases aspects of agriculture, health, education, entertainment, lifestyle and general interest products and services in the area, and helps to bring tourism and generate community spirit in the town. Over 380 exhibitors had displays and 8,000 visitors attended the event in 2009.
