Meekathara is located 771 kilometres north-northeast of Perth, and is a major supply centre for the pastoral and mining area in the Murchison region.

The climate is hot and dry, with an annual rainfall of between 200 mm and 500 mm. No viable horticultural industry exists in the area, although extensive but poor cattle stations do exist.

The area has experienced several short lived mining booms, the most recent taking place during the 1980s, with mining continuing until 2004 at St Barbara Mines's Bluebird Gold Mine.

Exploration restarted in the area, following which a company named Mercator Gold took over operations in 2005 and conducted extensive drilling activities, including re-opening the mill and commencing production in 2007. However, Mercator Gold went into administration during 2008 and the mine was closed.

The area is still popular for gold prospecting and fossicking. The town is accessed along the Great Northern Highway and provides accommodation services.
