Margaret River is located 277 kilometers south of Perth in the Margaret River valley.

The town is located 9 kilometers inland from the Indian Ocean about halfway between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin. The climate is Mediterranean, and during summer the weather is warm and sunny, although with cooling sea breezes.

The river runs through the town, which is located within reach of some of the most magnificent temperate forest found anywhere in the world, in which ferns, palms and Jarrah trees produce scenes resembling an enchanted ancient forest.

Vineyards and wineries located in the area contribute only 1% of Australian wine by volume, although provide 20% of the finest quality wines produced nationally. In 2008, almost 5,500 hectares were under vine and over 138 wineries operated in the area.

Many dairy farms and other agricltural pursuits are conducted in the Margaret River region. Establishments include the Margaret River Dairy Company which caters to more than 600,000 visitors per year. Also, the Margaret River Farmer's Market is held twice a month from June to December at the Old Hospital, Community Resource Centre.

Several hundred caves are located within the nearby Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Six of which are open to the public.

The most famous of the caves is the multi-chambered Mammoth Cave, located 21 kilometres south of the town and containing fossils which are more than 35,000 years old. The cave can be explored by a self-guided audio tour, and also offers partial disabled access.

The other five caves accessable by the public are Jewel Cave, Lake Cave, Ngilgi Cave, Calgardup Cave and Giants Cave. Many other caves can be accessed by experienced cavers who obtain appropriate permits.
