Marble Bar is located 1476 kilometres North East of Perth. It is a town
in the Pilbara region that is well known for its extremely hot weather.
The town is named after a deposit of jasper located at Marble Bar Pool 4 km from town, where the detailed colour and pattern of the quartz rock can be seen by splashing water onto the stone.
The most famous building in the town is the Ironclad Hotel built in the 1890s and constructed of corrugated iron sheets. The hotel is listed on the Western Australian register of heritage places.
The area has an arid climate with very hot summers and mild to warm winters. During a 160 day period from 31 October 1923 to 7 April 1924, the town set a world record of the longest period of consecutive days when temperatures were 37.8 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) or more.
During December and January, temperatures in excess of 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) are common, and the average maximum temperature exceeds normal human body temperature for 6 months of the year. Rainfall occurs mostly during the summer months.
The town has a resident population of approximately 200, and an elevation above sea level of 178 metres. Today, manganese mining, gold mining and pastoral production are the main economic activities in the area.
