The town has over a few short years grown from a collection of isolated holiday shacks into a major regional centre which attracts substantial numbers of international visitors.
The coastline is home to a broad range of wildlife, including dolphins, pelicans, shags and marine life, and the city is famous for its protected waterways, plus its boating, fishing and magnificent beaches.
The area experinces a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool winters. The average summer temperature is 27°C. Frosts are rare although do occur annually in some locations.
Mandurah experiences seasonal rainfall of about 850mm a year, although this once reliable rainfall has fallen significantly during recent years. The winter rains are often accompanied by severe winds and storms, making it one of the windiest cities in Australia and one of the highest instances of tornados in the world.
The city has seven day trading during summer, plus during school and public holiday periods. Several major shopping areas exist, including Centro Mandurah located at the intersection of Pinjarra and Mandurah Roads. The Bridge Quarter located in the CBD and Dolphin Quay/Mandurah Ocean Marina located at the intersection of Mandjar Bay and the Peel Inlet.
