Leonora is located 833 kilometres northeast of Perth, and 237 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie.

Primarily a mining town in the Goldfields-Esperance region, with a number of major gold and nickel mines operating within the Shire. The town is a service centre for the mining, exploration and pastoral industry in the area, and in 2006 had a population of 401.

The area is too arid to support agriculture, although a substantial pastoral industry exists.Two hotels are available within the town.

The Golden Gift Carnival is held in the town each year during early June.

Gwalia is a nearby former mining town. The Gwalia Historic Site offers visitors the opportunity to experience the toughness of life in an early outback mining town.
