Laverton is a gold and nickel mining town located 957 kilometres north-northeast of Perth at the western edge of the Great Victoria Desert.

The town is the centre of administration for the Shire of Laverton, and has an elevation of 461 metres above sea level. The area is extremely arid, and has a mean annual rainfall of only 230 millimetres

The population of the area fell from 2,078 to 730 in the five years between 2001 and 2006, due to falling activity within the local mining industry.

However, recent mining activity in the area has seen the re-opening of the old Windarra Mine by Poseidon Nickel and the re-opening of the old Sons of Gwalia Barnicoat Mine by Crescent Gold.

Hotel, motel and caravan park accommodation is available within the town, and a range of Indigenous art and artefacts are available for purchase from the Laverton Outback Art Gallery.
