Located 110 kilometres north of Perth, Lancelin is a small
fishing and tourist town within the Shire of Gingin situated at the end
of Wanneroo Road.
The town has a permanent population of approximately 600, which increases to 2,500 during the peak holiday period of Christmas and New Year. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are popular sports, as are sandboarding and 4-wheel driving on the beaches and dunes.
The Lancelin Ocean Classic is a windsurfing event which was initially run in 1986. The event now runs over four days in January and consists of wave sailing, marathon and slalom events. It is the oldest windsurfing event held in Australia. Learn more
The town is a popular destination for people from Perth who are seeking to escape city life, plus is famous worldwide for its windsurfing and fishing activities.
Several natural bays are located along the coast, where rock lobster fishermen moor their boats during the day. These bays are ideal for fishing, swimming, boating and most water related activities.
Sea lions and dolphins frequent the bay, and during spring the landscape around Lancelin appears to be ablaze with the brilliant colours of native wildflowers.
The town is rated as one of the world's top windsurfing locations, although many other water sports can also be enjoyed locally such as surfing, kiting, snorkeling, diving, boating, swimming, fishing, motor bikes and sandboarding.
An excellent range of facilities are available, including a tavern, motel, several restaurants, pizza shops, bakery, takeaways, general store, surf shop, service station, bank and post office.
A Greyhound bus service operates Mondays/Wednesdays and /Fridays from Perth to Lancelin along the new Indian Ocean Drive coastal route.
