Kulin is located in the Eastern Wheatbelt region 283 kilometres east of Perth.

The town is the agricultural centre of a district which has a population of about 350, and whose main activities are wheat and sheep farming. The town contains a district high school, a bank branch, shopping facilities, hotel, motel, caravan park accommodation, the local council offices and a telecentre.

The town also has a Police Station which covers the shire and the surrounding areas. Two Police Officers live permanatly in the town and conduct Highway Patrols plus provide support to nearby stations.

The Kulin Bush Races are held each year during October, and involve horse racing, betting, alcohol and fireworks. The event is held on one day, although visitors are allowed to sleep the night before and the night after the event. All earnings generated from the event are invested into further developing the community.

The roads leading into and through the town display over 100 characters. The largest of these is 10 m long and 5 m high. All the characters are created primarily from empty lubricant tins and drums and are based on entries in the annual Bush Races.

The town is a stop on the Transwa bus service to Esperance.
