The Kimberley region is one of the nine regions of the state and is located in the far north, more than 2000 kilometres from Perth.
The region covers an area of more than 421,000 square kilometres, and is bordered on the west by the Indian Ocean, on the north by the Timor Sea, on the south by the Great Sandy and Tanami Deserts, and on the east by the Northern Territory.
The Kimberley is one of the world's last great wilderness areas and is more than double the size of the United Kingdom. The total population however, is only slightly greater than 40 000, who mostly reside in the towns of Kununurra and Wyndham located in the east and Broome and Derby located in the west.
The Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster is a community event which celebrates the East Kimberley region, highlighting cultural diversity, stunning landscapes and local hospitality.
The Muster began in 2001 as a one night dinner for local businesses operating in the outback, and has since grown significantly to feature more than 50 events in a two-week festival. The major draw-card is the Airnorth Kimberley Moon Experience, which is staged on the banks of the Ord River and attracts more than 4000 visitors.
The Kimberley experiences 3 seasons. The wet season from December to April, the dry season from April to September and the buildup during October and November.
Over 16,000 people work in the Kimberley, with about 28 percent of the region's workers employed in health and community services, including health, police and other services. Other areas of employment in the region include retail, agriculture, fishing, hospitality and construction.
Many visitors to the Kimberley stay on, sometimes permanently. This is because the Kimberley provides a lifestyle which is unique and unavailable anywhere else in the world.
