The city was founded during the Gold Rush of the late 1880’s following the discovery of gold, and has consistently produced high quantities of gold ever since. Today, one tenth of the gold produced in the world is mined in Kalgoorlie.
The rich history of the city has been carefully preserved, including lavish hotels, plus other buildings that were constructed during the early days of the gold rush to service the new miners arriving in the area. Also, visitors to the city can view the Kalgoorlie Super Pit which is Australia's largest gold mining site.
Several former and still operating gold mining towns are located within reach of Kalgoorlie, these include Coolgardie, Leonora, Laverton and Menzies and they are all well worth visiting.
In addition to the many hotels in Kalgoolie, numbers of high quality restaurants are also available, especially around the Hannan Street area.
The distance from Perth to Kalgoorlie is about 600km, the city is easily accessed from Perth, and also from the eastern states by rail, air or road.
