The town is located on the shores of Mary Ann Harbour. It has a seaside atmosphere and is an ideal holiday destination for those with interests in fishing and camping.
The town suffered a severe setback in 2009 when Australian mining company BHP announced the closure of the nearby Ravensthorpe Nickel Mine. The world economic crisis and the resulting fall in demand for stainless steel saw the mine close. As a result a substantial portion of the town's population had to seek employment elsewhere.
A percentage of the town's electricity is generated by a wind-diesel system using two 600 kilowatt wind turbines and two low-load diesel generators.
Tourism is a growing industry in the area as increasing numbers of whales, seals and dolphins come into the offshore waters. The beaches and headlands in the area are pristine and the beauty of the area is outstanding, with rocky foreshores and brilliant white sandy beaches. Many visitors to the area consider the local coastline to be among the most beautiful to be found anywhere in Australia.
The Fitzgerald River National Park located nearby, is a huge 330,000-ha area of coastline between Hopetoun and Bremer Bay which contains the Hamersley and Fitzgerald River valleys, plus gorges, cliffs, sand plains, isolated mountains and pebbly beaches.
Spectacular displays of wildflowers can be seen between August and November, and during the winter months, southern right whales can be observed in the offsore waters from the cliff-tops at Point Ann.
