Hillarys is located in the City of Joondalup, 21 kilometres north of Perth.

The area has a resident population of about 10,000 and covers 6.3 square kilometres. It has a median elevation of about 20 metres above sea level.

Hillarys Boat Harbour is a large marina development which includes the Sorrento Quay retail development. It was built in 1987 and includes an aquarium plus numerous shops and restaurants. Also, whalewatching cruises and ferry services to Rottnest Island operate from the harbour.

The Marmion Marine Park is located offshore, it covers an area of 10,500 hectares and is about 12 kilometres long from north to south. The marine park runs from Trigg Island in the south to Burns Beach in the north.

Whitfords City shopping centre is located in the north east corner of the area. Also, several public parks are available locally and the coastal foreshore includes extensive protected reserves and brilliant beaches.
