The town is situated on a narrow strip of land between Lake Clifton and Harvey Estuary to the east and Yalgorup National Park to the west.
It consists of roadhouses located on the Old Coast Road which provide services to passing trucks and motorists. Several olive groves and orchards operate at Island Point, while rural residential estates are also popular within the area. Also, a liquid waste facility is operated by a local engineering company at nearby Mount John.
The City of Mandurah and the Shire of Waroona, developed a structure plan for the Herron-Lake Clifton area in 2006 after anticipating a population increase in the region following the completion of the Peel Deviation, which is a continuation of the Kwinana Freeway from Perth.
The discovery boardwalk located at Lake Clifton provides visitors with the opportunity to view the thrombolites located within the lake.
