Helena Valley is located in the Shire of Mundaring, 24 kilometres east of Perth.
The area has a resident population of about 2800 and covers 6.3 square kilometres. The elevation of the area reaches up to 95 metres above sea level.
The area is mostly rural although is increasingly becoming urbanised. A shopping centre is located within the area near the base of Greenmount Hill.
The Helena River flows through the area and Greenmount National Park is located immediately to the east, plus Gooseberry Hill National Park is located to the south.
The Railway Reserve Historic Trail runs to the east and the north of the community, and the Great Eastern Highway runs east to nearby to the north of the community as it begins its steep climb up the Darling Scarp.
