Located 18 kilometres from the coast, at the foot of the Darling Scarp, the town is the centre of the state's dairy industry, containing an agricultural college, plus the headquarters of major agricultural companies are located within the town.
The area has a population of about 20 000, and the Harvey Agricultural Show takes place in the town each year during April.
The town is the centre of the Western Australian dairy industry and houses the headquarters of both the Harvey Fresh and Harvey Beef brand names. Also, citrus orchards and viticulture flourish in the region.
A high school, a primary school, shopping and dining facilities, accommodation (hotel, motel, caravan park), council offices and the Forest Products Commission's Timber Technology Centre are each located within the town.
Harvey Dam is located 3 km east of Harvey via Quindanning Road. Fish found in the dam include Redfin Perch, Rainbow Trout and Marron. An amphitheatre, boardwalk, walking trails, playground, barbecue facilities picknic areas and a boat ramp are located around the dam.
The district supports intense dairy and beef cattle farming, it is evergreen due to surrounding pastures being watered by irrigation channels and is one of the prettiest rural areas in the state.
The railway station houses a museum which documents early life in the town, and a replica of the original Stirling Cottage serves as the local tourist information centre and tearooms. A feature within the town is the Italian Internment Shrine, built during World War II by Italian internees.
