Halls Creek is located in the East Kimberley region, between the towns of Fitzroy Crossing and Turkey Creek, approximately 2850 kilometres from Perth. The town has an elevation of 423 metres above sea level.

The town is a service centre for the surrounding pastoral holdings, and  is the only sizeable town for 365 kilometres to the east and 555 kilometres to the west along the Great Northern Highway. It services the growing tourism industry with a hotel, a motel, a caravan park and two roadhouses.

Several tours operate from the town to the Bungle Bungles and to  Wolfe Creek Crater. Some local gold mining activities are still carried out in the area by a few local prospectors, although large-scale mining ceased some years ago with the closure of the White Elvire River Mine.

The area is home to the indigenous Jaru and Kija peoples, plus is home to some Tjurabalan peoples from the desert to the south of the town, who together represent more than 60% of the town's population.

Living conditions in the town are often basic and the health of the local indigenous population is very poor. Many other remote towns and communities in the Pilbara and in the Kimberley, plus in other remote areas of the state face similar issues. It is estimated that 90 percent of pregnant indigenous women living in the town are alcoholic and nearly a third of new born babies suffer from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

This situation has to some extent been addressed by a 2007 prohibition in the town on the sale from licensed premises of packaged liquor with an alcohol content greater than 2.7 per cent. In September 2009 it was reported that assaults and drink driving arrests had decreased dramatically as a result of the bans.
