The area has a resident population of about 17,000 and covers an area of 14.8 square kilometres which is mostly residential, although some semi rural locations remain.

The community is well serviced by Gosnells and Seaforth rail stations, with travel to Perth taking about 25 minutes. Albany Highway is the main road link into Perth from the area. The highway is also the main road from the Perth metropolitan region to Albany, which is located some 390 kilometres to the south.

Development of the area initially commenced during the 19th century and continues today.

The Darling Scarp, including Banowly Regional Park is located to the east. Tonkin Highway also lies to the east, plus to the south of the area, with Champion Lakes located to the south beyond the highway.
