The area has a resident population of about 3500, and covers an area of about 25 square kilometres.
It is located at the highest point on the darling Scarp south of the Helena River, and is usually associated with the railway formation of the Kalamunda Zig Zag and Statham's Quarry located to the north west of the Gooseberry Hill National Park.
