Gnowangerup is located 355 kilometres south east of Perth.
1400 people live within the shire, raising beef cattle, sheep and growing wheat, plus barley, lupins, peas and linseed. The town is a typical agricultural service centre with a hotel/motel and a railway line, plus farm machinery yards and service shops which provide for the needs for the local population.
The town acquired its name either from the local Aboriginal word gnowneerup which means the place of mallee hen eggs, or from the word ngow, which means malleefowl.
The area is known Australia wide for its merino sheep and attracts large crowds to the Gnowangerup Annual Stud Field Days.
