Geraldton is located 424 kilometres north of Perth and is an important
centre for mining, fishing, wheat and sheep farming plus tourism.
The city has a rapidly growing popultion of approximately 38 500 (2011), and is the administrative centre of the Midwest's industry base, which ranges from rock lobster fishing to agriculture and iron ore production. Other industries operating within the region include mining, fishing, manufacturing, construction and tourism.
The port has been dredged to a depth of 9.4 m at the berths, which is suitable for ships of 64,000 metric tons. In 2009 the Western Australian Government gave the go-ahead for a new deepwater port located at Oakajee, 25 km north of the city. This port will service the mining industry, especially iron ore.
The city is located on Champion Bay on a stretch of coastline known as the Batavia Coast, and is a popular holiday destination with West Australians plus with interstate and international visitors. There is plenty to do and see in and around this rapidly growing city, including fishing, diving, kite surfing and exploring the nearby country.
The Chapman and Greenough Rivers frame the city to the north and to the south. Surfing is a popular activity along the coast, especially at popular surf spots such as Flat Rocks, Back Beach, Greenough, Glenfield and Sunset Beach.
The Houtman Abrolhos islands scene of the infamous 1629 Batavia mutiny and home to one of nature's most spectacular marine areas are located 60 kilometres to the west of the city.
The Australian Defence Satellite Communications Station (ADSCS) is located inland near Geraldton at Kojarena. The station has four satellite tracking dishes. Following three years of secret negotiations between the US and the Australian Federal Government, it was announced in 2007 that a new US military communications base would be built near Geraldton.
