Fremantle is known for its well preserved architecture, including many convict built colonial era buildings, plus the old jetty, the port, the roundhouse and the prison, which each combine to provide the city with a variety of interesting building styles and streetscapes. Many buildings are constructed of locally quarried stone and display ornate facades which follow a varied range of architectural styles.

The area has a resident population of about 25,000 and covers an area of 5.6 square kilometres.

Many restaurants and shops are located within the city centre and also around the port area. Plus, the city enjoys its own fashionable cappuccino strip. The Fremantle Arts Centre is another popular location with visitors, and several private art galleries are located throughout the city, including some which specialise in displaying work produced by Aboriginal artists.

Other attractions around the city include the Freo Markets, the old Freo Prison and the E Shed Markets. Also, the restaurants located around Fishing Boat Harbour are very popular with tourists.

A ferry to and from Perth operates each day along the Swan River, providing visitors with opportunities to view many unique riverside landmarks which may otherwise not be seen. It is also possible to fit in some fishing, either from one of the local beaches or from a fishing charter boat.

Many unique events are held within the city each year and information about these can be obtained from the
local visitor centre.
