Fitzroy Crossing is a small town located on the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley region, 400 km east of Broome, 300 km west of Halls Creek and approximately 2,524 kilometres from Perth. The town has a resident population of approximately 1000 and is elevated 114 m above sea level.

The town was originally located on the river bank out of reach of major flood waters at a location where the river could be forded. The original causeway crossing still stands in the old town, along with the police station, the former post office, a footbridge across Brooking Creek and the old cemetery.

The settlement services local stations and serves as a stopover for tourists who are exploring the rugged Kimberley region and nearby Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, or traveling to the Bungle Bungles Purnululu National Park, or Kununurra and Darwin.

The town has grown over recent years due to mining operations located 80km to the south east. Also because of the growth of local indigenous communities and the growing popularity of the Kimberley and the Gibb River Road as tourist destinations.

Geikie Gorge National Park is located approximately 20 kilometres north east of the town along a bitumen road. The gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge are each located within the park and are remnants of an ancient barrier reef which developed some 350 million years ago during the Devonian Period.
