Ferndale is located in the City of Canning, 15 kilometres south of Perth.

The area has a resident population of about 4,200 and occupies an area of 3.6 square kilometres. It is bordered by Metcalfe Road to the south east, by the Canning River to the north and the north west, and by Bannister Creek to the south west.

Development of the area commenced in the late 1960s. Public open space located along the Canning River Reserve and along Bannister Creek is a strong feature of the area, plus Ferdale Park is a large public park located nearby.
