Exmouth is located on the tip of the North West Cape 1,270 kilometres north of Perth and 3,366 kilometres southwest of Darwin.

The town was established in 1964 to support the nearby United States Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt, and relies on tourism for its existence. The population of about 1,844 (2006) swells to more than 6000 at the height of the tourist season.

The nearby Cape Range National Park which contains some spectacular gorges is 506 square kilometres in size, with the main area of the park located on the west coast of the Cape.

In the ocean you can experience diving onto coral reefs and swimming with tropical fish, dolphins and manta rays, in some of the clearest water found anywhere in the world.

The reef reaches out two kilometres from the shore - and is populated with an amazing range of marine life.

To explore further out, glass-bottom boat trips are available or you can join a snorkeling tour. You are more likely to encounter dugongs, turtles, dolphins and manta rays in the deeper water offshore. Between March and June, whale sharks visit the region, and migrating whales can be seen between June and October.

Between December and February turtles lay their eggs on the beaches in the evening and the hatchlings later emerge from the nests and rush to the ocean.

The town has a relaxed atmosphere, where warm days end with stunning sunsets and star studded night skies.
