Dongara is located 351 kilometres north of Perth on the Brand Highway.

The population is approximatley 2,700. The town is located at the mouth of the Irwin River and is paired with port Dennison located three kilometres to the south of the Irwin River. The two towns are often promoted as being a significant rock lobster (cray) fishing and processing industry area.

The town of Dongara is noted for having some of the finest stands of Moreton Bay fig trees found anywhere in Australia.

Tourism is a significant industry in the area, with many accommodation services and plenty of fishing, windsurfing, sailing and surfing opportunities available. The town also supports farming, fishing, manufacturing, gas and oil fields and mineral sands mining.
