Fitzroy Crossing
Derby is located in the Kimberley region. The major industries of the
area include sheep and cattle breeding for export, plus fishing and
tourism.
The town is surprisingly large, with a population of approximately 4500.
The port experiences the highest tides of any port in Australia, with 11 m (36 feet) of difference between high tide and low tide, causing an enormous volume of water to move in and out of King Sound every 6 hours. This, combined with the silty outflow from the Fitzroy River, contributes to the creation of very muddy waters.
A range of recreation facilities are located within the town, including a library, swimming pool, art gallery, ovals and areas equipped for football, cricket, tennis, squash, netball, basketball, horse riding and rodeo.
The Boab Festival has operated in the town since 1961 and includes traditional events including a Mardi Gras and other festivities. The festival runs each year over several weeks during May, June and July, and showcases the talents and attractions of the West Kimberley.
Two chain stores operate within the town, plus clothing and furniture shops, a news agency, a chemist, hotels and restaurants/cafes are also available. As are two primary schools, a high school, a Community Resource Centre (Telecentre) and pre school facilities. Health services are provided by the hospital, which is the best equipped in the Kimberley region. Also, extended care facilities are available for the aged and infirm.
