Dampier is a major industrial port located in the north-west of the
state 1562 kilometres from Perth. The Dampier Port is part of the 42
island Dampier Archipelago, a hugely diverse marine ecosystem where the
local fauna includes whales, dugongs, turtles, coral and sponges.
Some 2000 people live in the town, which was originally designed and constructed in 1965 by the Hamersley Iron mining company to service the local port and processing centre.
The town is located 20 km from Karratha on the edge of King Bay where the beaches are fringed with palm trees. Low rainfall and high temperatures are a feature of the area, although the town has a pleasant greenness about it, which is the result of much nurturing and watering, and this has created a location which is as pleasant as any company town could ever be.
Physically one of the largest ports in Australia, Dampier is the largest tonnage port in the country. Over 50 million tonnes of iron ore from the Hamersley mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo pass through the port each year. The port facilities and the local industries can each be visited and inspected.
