City Beach is located in the Town of Cambridge, 10 kilometres west north-west of Perth.

The area has a resident population of about 6000, it covers an area of 10 square kilometres and is almost exclusively residential.

Extensive sand dunes and bushland areas have been retained adjacent to the coast and which are home to wildlife such as hawks, mice and rabbits, plus the occasional snake.

Surfing is a popular activity in the area, and City Beach usually enjoys surf conditions that are suitable for beginner to intermediate, although the local area known as The Break can be hazardous. Kitesurfing and windsurfing activities can at times be seen at City Beach during the summer months.

Two competitive surf life saving clubs are based in the area, one at Floreat Beach and the other at City Beach.

As the name suggests it is located near the beach and in close proximity to the city. Development of the area commenced in 1928 and proceeded in stages over the next 60 years.

The northern section of the area was developed immediately prior to the 1962 Commonwealth Games, then known as the Empire Games, as a village designed to accommodate visiting athletes attending the games.

Herdsman Lake is located to the west, while Wembley Golf Complex is located to the south of the area, and the Indian Ocean forms the western boundary.
