Chidlow is located within the Shire of Mundaring, 45 kilometres east of Perth.

The area has a resident population of about 1800, and is surrounded by forests, including Chidlow Recreational Reserve and Woorola Regional Park, plus numerous hobby farms. To the south of the settlement, the Great Eastern Highway traverses the area from east to west.

The area is a rural retreat, where the Railway Reserve Heritage Trail has become one of the recreational facilities in the Shire of Mundaring for walking, cycling and horse riding.

Lake Leschenaultia is located nearby and is popular  with locals and visitors for swimming, canoeing, walking, camping and picnics. The lake was originally constructed in the 1880s to provide water for the steam trains that ran on the old Eastern Railway from Fremantle to York.

The Chidlow Craft Market is held at the Chidlow Hall, located on Old Northam Road, Chidlow on the first Sunday of every month between 10am and 3pm.
