Cervantes is located 231 kilometres north of Perth in the Shire of
Dandaragan. The town was established in 1962 and named after an American whaling ship which was wrecked off the coast in 1844.
It has a resident population of about 620 is located on the coast and has an average elevation of 7 metres above sea level.
Industry in the town consists mostly of fishing, with visitors to the Pinnacles desert in Nambung National Park also supporting a small tourism industry. Nearby Lake Thetis contains stromatolites. Other local features in the area include the Kwongan heathland, Lesueur National Park and Stockyard Tunnel.
Facilities in the town include an airstrip/landing strip, campground, caravan park, fire station, health centre, hotel/motel, service station and tennis courts
