Capel is located in the South West region of the state 212 kilometres
south of Perth, midway between Bunbury and Busselton on
the Capel River.
The area has a resident population of about 1400, covers 235 square kilometres and is elevated at approvimately 19 metres above sea level.
The town is surrounded by farm paddocks and the nearby national park, which provides visitors with access to the tuart forest.
It is a traditional farming area, with agricultural pursuits including dairy and beef production. During recent years, the area has become popular for hobby farms and various innovative agricultural pursuits. Tourism is increasingly an important part of the local economy.
The resources industry is another major source of employment in the region and several large mineral sands mining operations exist in the area.
The Challenge Dairy Co-operative operates in the town, and is an independent collective with processing and marketing operations, which support local dairying operations.

Many local families have had a presence in the area since European settlement first occured in 1836. More recently, job opportunities and the rural lifestyle have encouraged many new families to move into the area.
An active sporting and cultural community exists and many sporting and cultural groups operate within the town, providing a broad range of activities. The annual Capel Fest and Art Classic is a major event which each year brings thousands of visitors to the town.
