Cape Leeuwin is the most south-westerly mainland point of the state. A
few small islands and rocks, the St Alouarn Islands, extend further to
the south.
The closest settlement to the cape is Augusta located to the South-east of the cape. Located on the headland is the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and the buildings which were previously occupied by the lighthouse keepers.
Within Australia, the Cape is often considered to be the point at which the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean meet. Formally however, the Southern Ocean exists only to the south of 60°S.
The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse was completed in 1896 and is a popular tourist destination which is still in operation today.
